Silk Value Chain: Optimizing the value chain for our farmers in Tongaren

1. Processing Specialist for Oils & Food Products

Location: CHW NGO (Core Health & Wealth International), Tongaren, Western Kenya

Duration: 1–3 months (hybrid option: partly online)

Ideal Start: Between April 2026 and August 2026

Core Health & Wealth International works with farmer cooperatives and supports over 60,000 farmers and their families in the Tongaren region in Western Kenya. After establishing demonstration farms and delivering extensive organic farming trainings, we are now expanding into value addition and product processing to strengthen the long-term sustainability of our communities.

Key tasks: The volunteer will use their expertise in extract product processing—particularly in oil extraction and food product development—to support the design, setup, and improvement of small‑scale processing units for raw materials produced by our farmers. This incudes


Quality oil processing: Avocado oil and soybean oil (initial focus)
Bee farming & honey production
Spice blending and other value‑added food products

Your Profile : Background in chemistry, food technology, agricultural processing, or related fields. Experience in oil extraction/pressing, food processing, or small-scale production systems. Interest in working hands-on with rural communities. Ability to design simple, practical processes adapted to local conditions. Open to spending time on-site in Kenya; partial remote support is also possible.

2. Help to develop a Daycare Facility Model for Children of Teen Mothers

Location: Webuye, Kenya at GAASPP NGO, ca. 4 -6 weeks onsite at our center and guesthouse

Ideal start: April 2026 – December 2026. More details (pdf)

Key tasks:

•Share recommendations for integrating young mothers into childcare responsibilities where appropriate.
•Assess the current ECD/daycare setup and identify practical improvement areas.
•Develop or refine age‑appropriate learning and stimulation routines.
•Create a simple operational model for daily childcare activities (schedules, roles, processes).
•Review and strengthen child safeguarding policies and implementation.
•Train local staff on positive caregiving, and protection standards.
•Provide guidance on cost‑effective, scalable approaches suitable for low‑resource contexts.

What you should bring: The volunteer should arrive with expertise, not to learn on the job. Early Childhood Development (ECD) experience (ages 0–5), experience in Daycare / childcare operations design, Child safeguarding & protection frameworks, Staff training & capacity building, Basic project management skills. Highly valuable: Experience designing cost‑effective / scalable models, Experience in low‑resource or humanitarian settings, Knowledge of trauma‑informed care, Familiarity with teen mother reintegration programs

3. Volunteer expert for Indigenous Reforestation & School Agroforestry Development

Location: Webuye, Kenya at GAASPP NGO, ca. 4 – 6 weeks onsitew (ith pre-assignment virtual consult)

Ideal implementation period: March 2026 – December 2026.

What you should bring: A motivated professional with experience in agroforestry systems, ecosystem restoration, or sustainable land management. The volunteer should bring a solid understanding of tree nursery operations, native species propagation, soil conservation, and community‑based environmental programs. Prior exposure to smallholder farming systems, tropical ecology, or nature‑based solutions is an advantage. Empathy.

4. Silk Value Chain: Optimizing the value chain for our farmers in Tongaren

Location: CHW International Tongaren, Western Kenya

Ideal start: April/May 2026

Key tasks: Help us to develop further the silk value chain as an opportunity and high value income enterprise for farmers/and rural community. Tasks would include e.g. Train farmers and community groups in handling, processing, and maintaining quality across the value chain. Support product development ideas (raw silk, yarn, textiles, blended fibres) aligned with market opportunities. Map potential markets and buyers — locally, regionally, and internationally — for different stages of the silk value chain. Create a basic business model showing how silk can generate income for rural households and women’s groups. Provide recommendations for long‑term sustainability, including environmental considerations and community ownership.

Volunteer Profile: Ability to advise on market opportunities and basic business models Expertise in textile, fibre, silk production or natural materials processing; Experience with small‑scale or rural value chains (processing, quality, workflows); Practical knowledge of product development (yarns, fibres, textiles); Understanding of agri‑based value chains and farmer‑centric models; Skills in training, coaching, and simplifying complex processes

5. WordPress specialist who helps to build our Digital Backbone/Membership Platform

Location: remote

Ideal start: now – June 2026. More details (pdf)

Key tasks: We are looking for a volunteer who can support us in building and refining the SCN (Sustainable Collaboration Network) membership platform using WordPress. The volunteer will help us set up a user‑friendly, professional, and secure online environment where NGOs can share solutions, access resources, and collaborate more effectively.

Support the setup and configuration of the SCN membership platform in WordPress.
•Implement or improve membership functions, user roles, and access levels.
•Assist with the layout, structure, and user experience design.
•Recommend and configure suitable plugins (security, membership, forms, learning modules, etc.).
•Ensure the design and functionality reflect SCN’s branding and workflow needs.
• Provide simple guidelines or a short handover document for ongoing maintenance.

Your engagement will take place fully remote, with flexible work times. However, if desired, an optional on-site stay in Webuye/Eldoret can be arranged at a later stage to work directly with our local teams and partners and for wordpress trainings to our Core SCN members.

6. Help us to get a branded SCN Powerpoint template set

Location: remote

Ideal start: now – May 2026.  (pdf), time investment: ca. 8-10 hrs

We are looking for a volunteer who can support us in designing a professional PowerPoint template for the Sustainable Collaboration Network (SCN). The volunteer will help us create a clean, consistent, and easy‑to‑use slide deck that reflects SCN’s branding and can be used across teams and partner organizations.

Key tasks: Develop a PowerPoint master template (colors, fonts, layouts, icons)

•Create a set of standard slides (agenda, about us, impact, project overview, contact, etc.).
•Ensure the design is aligned with SCN’s visual identity
•Provide simple guidelines for staff on how to use the template
•Work fully online with flexible scheduling
•your engagement will happen remotly. However, an additional stay in Webuye/Eldoret later on can be arranged.

Expertise in PowerPoint master design, brand application, clear visual storytelling, basic data visualization, and usability-focused handover. And empathy and interest in the work with vulnerable communities.
