Empowering Teenage Mothers – A Strategic Focus of SCN Kenya

At SCN Kenya, we recognize that teenage pregnancy is not just a health issue—it’s a systemic challenge that affects education, economic opportunity, and generational well-being. Started in 2024, our network of eight NGOs is united around a shared mission: empowering teenage mothers to reclaim their futures and break the cycle of poverty.

The Challenge

In counties like Bungoma, thousands of girls become mothers before the age of 19, often dropping out of school and facing lifelong barriers to education, employment, and dignity. Their children, too, face limited access to nutrition, healthcare, and learning—creating a cycle of disadvantage.

Our Response

Through our System Changer Network (SCN) in Kenya, we run prevention and awareness training sessions for girls and young teenage mothers in Webuye and Tongaren, Bungoma county, and in Eldoret, Western Kenya as well as in our partner centers in Central Kenya. We provide income-generating training, mentoring, and support, collaborating with local NGOs, nurses, schools, faith leaders and mental well-being trainers. Our partners in the SCN Kenya network run dedicated children protection and sexual education programs for young and teenage mothers in places like the Mukuru Slums and at Lake Victoria, ensuring that young mothers and their children receive the support they need to thrive. Solasa, another SCN Core partner, has organized a soccer tournament for teenage mothers at CHWI‘s place to raise even more awareness teenage mothers from different SCN locations have participated. Our partners:

With support from ChildFund Deutschland, and funding from the German government (bengo/Engagement global program) as well as Boehringer Ingelheim Corporate, SCN Kenya is implementing a transformative initiative in Mbakalo Ward, Bungoma County at our Core SCN partner NGO CHWI. This initiative comprises a community-based counseling and training center for young mothers, Support 100 teenage mothers to complete their education and pursue vocational paths, Establish Adolescent Mentorship Clubs in schools and churches to promote life skills and prevent early pregnancies, Engage parents and young fathers in awareness and training programs and Facilitate knowledge exchange across regions through the SCN network.

Why It Matters

This initiative is more than a project—it’s a blueprint for systemic change. By combining education, health, social protection, and community engagement, we’re creating a sustainable pathway for young women to thrive.
